WHAT IF: I Am Exactly Where I'm Supposed To Be in My Life?

October 30, 20237 min read

"Brainstorming the How" means starting from the Present and projecting into the future. So how does that work to really focus and be happy and content about your present situation?

I told my associate, Robert, more than a few times that, “Everything we need to make money is right on the table in front of us. All the cards are there. We have to turn them over and sort them out. But they are all right there in front of us.”

I was reflecting on my previous statement and then reflecting on another statement: “WHAT IF: I Am Exactly Where I'm Supposed To Be in My Life?”

Quite profound when I combine the two observations together. These observations and whimsical thoughts gave me a much more profound Realization. Notice that I’ve moved the dial from “Observation” to “Realization.” This movement gave me an epiphany. Let’s look it up in Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary.

What Is an Epiphany?

epiphany noun epiph·a·ny i-ˈpi-fə-nē  pluralepiphanies

1 capitalized : January 6 observed as a church festival in commemoration of the coming of the Magi as the first manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles or in the Eastern Church in commemoration of the baptism of Christ

2 : an appearance or manifestation especially of a divine being

3 a(1): a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something (2): an intuitive grasp of reality through something (such as an event) usually simple and striking (3): an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure b: a revealing scene or moment

In this definition, I identify with definition 3a(3) - “an illuminating discovery.” Yes, that would be the ideal definition and characterization of these two thoughts. Feels pretty good to have an epiphany I have to say. Deep revelations.

I think that the phrase: “WHAT IF: I Am Exactly Where I'm Supposed To Be in My Life?” is the more powerful of two phrases because it encompasses both financial aspects of my life but all other aspects of my life. So, I decided to see the ramifications of embracing this discovery. If indeed I am exactly where I’m supposed to be in my life with all its influences both coming into me and reaching outward.

In other words, I have everything I need to start up the Adventure.

Finding the Pieces

If I am exactly where I am supposed to be in this moment in my life, then all the tools needed to succeed are right here in the palm of my hands…and brain. All the “Tools” need a better look - more intensely, more carefully, more resolutely. Finally, my psychological Energy has received quite a boost in a number of ways. With this mandate of ‘I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be in Life’, then all the Tools become more relevant. What exactly are the Tools?

  • Contacts - people I know. The people that my contacts can reach

  • Internal Skills - sales, persuasion, organization, budgeting and more.

  • Physical Tools - from the hammers in my toolshed to the software on my computer.

In this case, the Tools that I have right now - are exactly the Ones Needed for the Job at Hand. So I have a growing and greater confidence in these tools because they are just right for the job. I’m not given a pneumatic drill when it’s not needed.

In my mind, my Tools are even more valuable because I am no longer waiting to get betters Tools or bigger Tools or more expensive Tools. The Tools that I have right now can accomplish the Job, the Task, the Goal.

The Time Is Now

With this mandate of ‘I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be in Life’, then this point in Life adds Immediacy. So, this immediacy means that I am focused on where I am and where I can go. It’s much like driving a car. Pay attention to the road - and not the curves ten miles ahead. And don’t think of ‘redriving’ the road behind me. That road is the past.

The Present. The Now. This Moment.

I am not looking into the past for a bunch of dread ‘should have done this’ and ‘should have not done that’ moments. Regrets which are really only anchors into the past. And the future is, well, tomorrow and unwritten. I like to think of the great David Lean film with Peter O’Toole called “Lawrence of Arabia”.

For those who don’t know classic cinema, O’Toole plays Lawrence of Arabia who led the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire. In one scene, he rescues a man who had fallen in the incredibly dangerous desert while trekking to overtake the Ottoman stronghold at Aqaba. While his Arab associates think that the future is written, Lawrence says of his rescue: “Nothing is written.”

“I Am Exactly Where I'm Supposed To Be in My Life?” is a mandate to realize this moment, right now, is the perfect moment to Act. The moment to project my heartfelt beliefs and actions outward without waiting. All my efforts up to now have led to this moment. This Perfect Moment for Action.

Energy Boost

Right now, with my mandate of “WHAT IF: I Am Exactly Where I'm Supposed To Be in My Life?”, I am energized inside in my head, my heart and my gut. While most of us understand the rush of energy into the head and the heart, but we think less about the Gut. I was astounded to discover that the gut has extensive neurons. Now, we’ve all heard about a ‘Gut Instinct’ which adds to our sense of Intuition, but now it’s confirmed about Neurons in the Gut. In this article entitled “Fascinating Life of Gut Neurons”, I saw this explanation:

Your gut is the home of a vast ecosystem that's made up of more than bacteria. There are also hundreds of millions of neurons carrying out essential functions and establishing direct connections with the brain.

Gut neurons are important for your digestive, hormonal, immune, and metabolic systems. They’re also crucial for your psychological health. In recent years, scientists discovered a relationship between certain depressive disorders and alterations in the vast ecosystem that is your gut.

By embracing the certain mandate “I Am Exactly Where I'm Supposed To Be in My Life”, I can now follow my Heart which is burgeoning with enthusiasm, energy and imagination. My imagination flows right into my brain which flows with logic, pattern recognition, brainstorming, logical connections and more. I am excited because well, after all, TODAY IS THE DAY. Today all moves forward because I have absolutely everything I need and am jumping off at the perfect jumping off point. The jumping off point - as I’m a World War II history junkie - is where the paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne or the 101st Airborne were at the door of their transport aircraft and then leaping out the door to their target. They were, every time, taking a Leap of Faith. Because Faith is what I have when the logical connectors are no longer there - but you Believe.

Now, the brain does have this “Inner Roommate” who’s a negative naysayer. No, that’s not a double negative - but a very negative voice inside all our heads. “It won’t work out.” “Too much of a risk.” “You’re not good at that.” But the good news is that the mandate says, “Thank your Inner Roommate and keep moving because today is the Day. It’s a perfect day to Act!

Seize The Day

The saying ‘Carpe Diem” means “Seize the Day” and that is precisely what my fully-embraced mandate - “I Am Exactly Where I'm Supposed To Be in My Life” - entails with its immediacy, energy and intensity of focus on the Now, the Present, the Moment.

Classic movies like “Lawrence of Arabia” have great themes about the human condition. I remember meeting Peter O’Toole briefly because I was working with a producer Robert Lecky who had financed “The Stunt Man.” O’Toole came into the office, filling the room with charm and presence. He was delightful and full of stories and looking for his next adventure. When I see the charismatic and determined Peter O’Toole (as Lawrence of Arabia) say that “Nothing is written” then I remember those moments with O’Toole. The lesson I take from the film was this:

All of us are exactly where we’re Supposed to be in our Lives. Embracing this sensibility, I am on the firing line, ready to launch into my adventure. Fully stocked and ready. The Adventure is mine, no more waiting, no more doubts, no more hesitation.

We hold the Pen in our hands to write the Story of our Own Lives.
